Course Description:
Algebra with Finance is a onecredit college and career preparatory course that integrates algebra, precalculus, probability and statistics, calculus and geometry to solve financial problems that occur in everyday life. Realworld problems in investing, credit, banking, auto insurance, mortgages, employment, income taxes, budgeting and planning for retirement are solved by applying the relevant mathematics that are taught at a higher level.
Students are encouraged to use a variety of problemsolving skills and strategies in realworld contexts, and to question outcomes using mathematical analysis and data to support their findings. The course offers students multiple opportunities to use, construct, question, model, and interpret financial situations through symbolic algebraic representations, graphical representations, geometric representations, and verbal representations.
Math concepts and skills are applied through study and problemsolving activities in workforce situations in the following areas: banking, investing, employment and income taxes, automobile ownership and operation, mathematical operations, consumer credit, independent living, and retirement planning and budgeting. Prerequisites for this course are Algebra I and Geometry.
Materials Needed:

An organized math notebook for notes, bellringers, assignments, and graded work (I would suggest getting some dividers to separate your notes from your bellringers, assignments, and graded work. This is not required though.)

Pencils, colored pencils, highlighters

Calculator (I do not require a specific calculator but I am more familiar with Texas Instrument calculators. Students will not be able to use their phones as a calculator.)

Classroom Policies:

Be on time and ready to learn every day: You are expected to be in class and ready to learn when the bell rings. You should have a sharpened pencil, an organized notebook, and your text book every day.

Seek help when needed: If you are having trouble with the material, please seek help. Ask your classmates, set up an appointment before or after school with me and/or utilize resources on the internet. Khan academy is a great resource and it’s free (https://www.khanacademy.org/). We also have a Panther Period twice a week where you can come into my classroom and get help.

Always show your work: The process for solving problems is just as important as getting the right answer so your work must be shown. If you do not show work you will not get credit.

Makeup and turn in missed assignments: You are responsible for all notes and assignments missed when absent. Assignments are posted daily on the calendar in my room. You have 3 days to makeup and turn in the work. Any work missed due to an unexcused absence will result in a grade of 0.

Late work; Any assignments that are turned in late will be penalized 10% every day it is late. Meaning that if you turn it in a day late the highest you could make is a 90, two days late the highest you could make is an 80, 3 days late the highest you could make is a 70, etc.

No food or drink: All food and drinks are not allowed in the classroom except water.

Be respectful of yourself, others, and school property.
Cell Phone and Smartwatch Policy:
Cell phone and smartwatch use is prohibited in this classroom unless its use is relevant to the curriculum and content. Until given permission, you are to keep devices put away out of my sight and yours. Cell phones and smartwatches brought into the classroom must be silenced and put away until after the bell rings.
If you are caught using your cell phone or smartwatch without permission, the following disciplinary actions will be taken no questions asked:
Grading Policy:
Each nine weeks grade will be based on total points earned divided by total points possible. Assignments in this class will carry the following values:
Homework, classwork, and bellringers  10 points
Quizzes  50 points
Projects and test  100 points
The final grade for this course can be found using the following formula:
Course Average =(1st Nine weeks + 2nd Nine weeks +3rd Nine weeks + 4th Nine weeks) X .90 + (final exam X .10)
