Matt Weaver is currently in his seventh year as Director of Bands at Southside High School.  He serves as the conductor of the Wind Ensemble and director of “The PRIDE” of Southside Marching Band.  In addition to the music performance classes, he also teaches music theory and appreciation courses.  Mr. Weaver is a 2012 graduate of Jacksonville State University where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Music Education.  While at JSU, Mr. Weaver performed in a number of ensembles including the Chamber Winds, the competitive Tuba Quartet, Brass Quintet, Pep Band and the Marching Southerners.  In 2008, he was a scholarship recipient to the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute where he studied with Daniel Perantoni.  He is also a founding member of the Pelham Street Brass Quintet.  Mr. Weaver currently serves as Principal Tubist for the Alabama Winds; an all-adult community band based out of Birmingham under the direction of Professor Randall Coleman of the University of Alabama.   

While at Southside, Mr. Weaver has worked to continue the band’s long tradition of musical excellence earning all superior ratings with both the concert and marching ensembles.  In fact, 2017 marked the 30th consecutive year of superior ratings for the Southside Band.  Due to the continued growth of the band, the Wind Ensemble was created in 2015 as an additional, audition-based concert ensemble band to the Southside Symphonic Band.   Under Mr. Weaver’s direction The PRIDE” has been invited to perform in the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade, the San Antonio “Fiesta Flambeau” parade, and in the Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom.

Mr. Weaver is a member of the National Association for Music Education, the Alabama Bandmasters Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Men’s Music Fraternity, and the International Tuba Euphonium Association.  In 2018, he was awarded a Citation of Excellence by the National Band Association.  Mr. Weaver met his wife Haley in band while at JSU.  The Weaver’s reside in Southside with their two-year-old son Benton and Mrs. Weaver serves as The PRIDE’s colorguard instructor. They attend Rainbow Presbyterian Church in Rainbow City, Alabama.
