Southside High School is the largest school in the Etowah County School System and serves 900 students in grades 9-12. SSHS student population is gained from the communities of Southside and Rainbow City. According to the 2010 Census, the population of Southside increased from the 2000 census 19.55% to a current population of 8,412. In the same Census, Rainbow City's population increased 13.9% to 9,602. These combined populations total 18,014.
Just as our community is growing, so is our school. Enrollment has increased 10.4% since 2010. We have over 25 different bus routes that serve our students from Rainbow City and Southside. SSHS had a new school built in 2007. Our new school has a very nice PE gym, 2 science labs, 3 computer labs, and a beautiful media center. We have just added two new portable classrooms this year due to the growth of our student body. Our mascot is the panther, and our colors are maroon and black.
